Staying ahead of the competition can be an on-going struggle. While it is not healthy for a company to focus too much time and attention on the competition, it is important to stay abreast of what your competition is doing. When evaluating the competition, assess the industry giants and companies closest to your space. But be sure that you don't exclude the small companies in your assessments. Sometimes a small competitor can have innovative ideas or marketing concepts, but may lack the capital to really benefit from the concept. This may present you with an opportunity.

Two weeks ago, I talked about the concept of selective perception, how subconsciously we pick and choose what we pay attention to. Then, last week, I explained how engagement with search is significantly different than engagement with other types of advertising. These two concepts set the stage for what I want to do today. In this column, I want to lay out a step by step hypothetical walk through of our cognitive engagement with a search page.

Right now, during the "age of information," combinations of pictures and words are all around us. We use them to communicate with one another in a kind of a emotional shorthand. Because there's just so much information out there, speed of communication is vital to anyone who wishes to get a message across: there is simply too much competition to allow for a lack of clarity and readability in one's message. More often then not, this kind of clarity and readability requires manipulating pictures and words such as to achieve the optimal effect. Graphic design is the discipline of learning to manipulate pictures and words in such a way as to optimally communicate with those around us.

In a single day, you will be assaulted by hundreds of thousands of discrete bits of information. I’m writing this from a hotel room on the corner of 43rd and 8th in New York. Just a simple 3 block walk down 8th Avenue will present me with hundreds bits of information: signs, posters, flyers, labels, brochures. By the time I go to sleep this evening, I will be exposed to over 3000 advertising messages. Every second of our lives, we are immersed in a world of detail and distraction, all vying for our attention. Even the metaphors we use, such as “paying attention”, show that we consider attention a valuable commodity to be allocated wisely.

One of the most powerful, yet simple way to retain customers is through reinforcement of your brand. While most of us cannot afford massive advertising campaigns, there are a number of tools at our disposal for staying in touch with current customers.

Printing greeting cards will not only reinforce your brand, but it also gives your company a personal touch. The following are a few ideas for when you should consider sending greeting cards to your customers.

Word of mouth is powerful in marketing. In the last two weeks, we’ve seen how the opinions of others can cause us to change our own beliefs to match. We’ve also seen how the speed at which the word spreads is a function not only of the structure of the network itself, but also the value of the message and its impact on the people in the network, as well as how much they stand to gain (or lose) by spreading the word.

Google decided to be helpful on Monday and share a post called Dynamic URLs vs. static URLs. We’ve since received a number of questions from clients about this issue asking “should I change my site?” or “did I just waste thousands of dollars making my engineers implement a rewrite?” The answer is no.
