Last spring, I attended the Pubcon conference in Boston put on by Webmaster World. During one of the breaks between the sessions, I was tucked away in an empty room trying to keep up with the inevitable flood of emails. Well, truth be told, it wasn't quite empty. There was another person, also hunched over a laptop, working at the table next to me. We were both pretty absorbed and quiet. It was one of those situations where you're wondering whether it's better to not introduce yourself and run the risk of looking like you're ignoring the person, or break the silence and acknowledge the other person by way of a quick nod and hi. I eventually opted for the later, and I'm glad I did. This was the way I met Tim Converse at Yahoo.

Anyone who is associated with doing business must be very familiar with the term outsourcing. Well outsourcing is nothing but giving your work to an outside firm or company to do it for you. This may sound unbelievable for someone who is not doing business, but for anyone who is dealing with a business venture, this comes as a life saver. Outsourcing is a life saver because you can shed off your workload and yet will be able to take care of all your work. Is it not amazing that you do not have to lose sleep over anything and still you will be able to meet all your deadlines? If you provide SEO services to your clients then nothing can be better then outsourcing SEO services to a third party.

There are few issues in search marketing more thorny and convoluted than click fraud. It's the elusive problem, the industry scourge that seems to defy definition. Everyone wants to know the extent of click fraud, but to date, there seems to be no credible numbers to attach to the problem. A recent BusinessWeek 'Investigation' called it the 'dark underground' of the Internet, a dizzying collection of scams and deceptions that inflate advertising bills for thousands of companies of all sizes. The BusinessWeek article pegged the occurrence of click fraud at 10% to 15% of ad clicks representing roughly $1 billion in annual billings. Unfortunately, the reporter used some questionable sources and math to come up with this number.

Several companies embark on site redesigns without fully researching the facts about the impacts their Website redesign can have on search engine rankings and how a smooth transition strategy can be implemented to ensure minimal impact on site traffic. All too often companies launch a redesigned site to lose traffic and rankings almost immediately then scramble to find a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) firm to help recuperate the loss. It's a cart before the horse situation.

Almost everyone I know with a website wants their site to rank well in at least the five major search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, Ask) for their particular topic or keywords. Generally, to be successful, this means showing up in the top ten results and as close to number one as possible. While no search engine strategy will immediately propel your site to the top of the rankings there are some seemingly simple things you can to give your site a much better chance. It's important to note that each search engine uses its own ultra secretive algorithm to rank sites, so search engine ranking strategies in general terms here that are likely to help improve your ranking collectively.

Citizen journalists and writers have become common place on the web. Perhaps you are considering blogging, but are unsure of how to enter the world of online journaling. As the medium has grown, I thought it might be a good idea to put together some general guidelines for new bloggers and reminders to veteran bloggers about blogging practices.
There is no Emily Post in blogging that offers etiquette advice, or a Miss Manners that details appropriate behavior. That does not mean there are not acceptable and unacceptable actions that bloggers should take. In order to efficiently communicate as a blogger on the Internet, it is critical to understand the unwritten rules of blogging etiquette.

A few weeks ago I posted about the role of social networks in the B2B marketplace. This morning I attended a webinar, presented by Hitwise, which focused on the growing popularity of social networking sites. LeeAnn Prescott of Hitwise mentioned that in October 2006, social networking accounted for 1 in every 20 internet visits. 82% of these were from myspace.com. That does seem like a lot doesn't it? By the way did you know that a search in Google for 'myspace' returns about a half of a billion results?

If you haven't heard, or received your invite, the annual SEMPO State of the Market survey is currently looking for search marketers to give us this years snapshot of the industry. You can find a link to the survey at the SEMPO site. Now in its 3rd year, this Survey has become the definitive year over year look at search marketing.
Knowing that we're in Chicago next week for Search Engine Strategies, we paused long enough to take some on the fly data points which we'll be sharing at a special SEMPO meeting on Monday night. I can share one of them with you in this column.

When anyone first enters into the realms of internet marketing they soon become exposed to the many products and services that are readily available to skyrocket their webpages up through the millions of pages to the first ten positions. It isn't difficult to be hoodwinked by many of these shonky practitioners and unfortunately there are more of those than there are of the helpful and truly knowledgable types. Or at least it seems that way.
