Most people when doing a search using a site like Google just enter in all the words they are searching for in the search box but there is a way to get more relevant results to what they are looking for. For example, in Google I juist entered in Jeffrey A. Solochek in the search box. I get 14,100 matches but when I enclose my name in quotes I get exactly 440 matching results. The reason is because without the quotes you are getting every site that has Jeffrey in it as well as every site that has Solochek in it. When you enclose everything in quotes then you will only get results that have my exact name on it.

The Internet contains numerous search engines, some of which offer what is known as "paid inclusion." This means that you pay the specific search engine an annual fee for your web page to be included in their index.

Of course, every search engine already has an automated program commonly called a "spider" that indexes all the web pages it locates online, and it does this for free. So whether you pay or not, your web page will eventually be indexed by all Internet search engines, as long as the spider can follow a link to your page. The major issue is, then, how quickly your page is indexed.

If your web site is listed in the Open Directory Project (ODP, dmoz.org) then Google and MSN will often use the text that the ODP uses to describe your web site in their own search results.

Unfortunately, the descriptions in the Open Directory Project are often outdated and they don't reflect the current status of a web site. That means that your web site might be listed with an outdated description in the search results on Google and MSN.

However, like every business, there are good companies and there are lemons. Knowing the right questions to ask and the criteria to look for will help you in choosing an affordable, effective search engine optimization company.

When looking at different companies, begin by considering the approach they employ to raise your search engine positions. Steer clear of companies that use cloaked, doorway, or bridge pages to raise your positions. These techniques violate most search engine policy, and in the worst case scenario, will only get your website severely penalized, if not removed entirely from a search engine's index.
