Google has just recently updated its local search and now includes Canada. This is a great way for smaller businesses in Canada to get noticed on the internet, and helps local internet users to find products and/or services that much easier.

Ever since Google released its local search in the United States, I have been waiting for it to be implemented for Canada. Google local works with the Yellow Pages data to help pinpoint the local resources you are interested in finding. This will make using the yellow pages that much easier and useful for businesses who will have to make sure they are listed correctly and that their information is upto date.

Is Google Broken?

I wrote about this topic last year, but it seems to have come to surface - the fact the Google may have hit their limit on the number of pages they can index.

As you probably already noticed, if you watch the web closely, Google doesn't seem to have performed a major update of their index in some time. There is an idea out there that illustrates why this may be so.

The idea goes something like this: The way Google was built was to use a unique identifier called a PageID which is used to categorize the web. Each page gets its own PageID. The problem may be that Google's PageID system may have only been built to assign a maximum of 4.2 billion unique PageID values (based on the math behind the ID value). Since they have been showing over 3 billion pages indexed since November, it is safe to assume that they could be nearing that 4.2 billion mark.

You probably know Google's link command. It's a special search query that allows you to find web sites that link to another web site.

For example, if you want to find web pages that link to Microsoft.com, enter "link:www.microsoft.com" in Google's search box.

Google is causing waves with both their latest update to their database, and in the stock markets. Just this month alone, there were three big bumps in the road for Google to declare its IPO.

Google asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to declare its IPO effective on Tuesday evening (August 17th). Google is expected to start accepting bids one hour after the SEC declares the offering to be effective. The preliminary price is expected to be in the range of $108 to $135 which was set in July.

Google said it will begin accepting bids as soon as one hour after the SEC declares the offering to be effective.

A few road bumps ahead for Google, and these are just from August!

One of the ways to boost traffic to your Web site is by purchasing keywords from one of the pay-per-click search engines or directories.

But with literally hundreds of choices, how do you pick the pay-per-click engine with the best visibility that has the potential of giving you a higher return on your investment?

And, just as important, what are some strategies for working with the pay-per-click engines, and how do they operate?

For years, the search engines have continued to introduce new factors into their algorithms to make their search results more relevant and to keep savvy search engine marketers from "cracking the system."

We've seen many ranking factors come and go in importance. For example, years ago, META tags were the key to success, or so we thought. Stick in META tags that were loaded with your keyword phrases, and you were sure to achieve top rankings.

Then, we had keyword weight as a ranking factor. We struggled to determine the keyword weight of our competitors' pages, then duplicate that weight in all of the various areas of our pages.

With the recent acquisition by Microsoft of an integrated Outlook search tool (Lookout) we saw Microsoft's first move into the desktop search space.

Sure they have been talking about it for over a year, as part of the eagerly anticipated next generation OS Longhorn, but this is the first product we have seen that will have the Microsoft logo.

Further, company spokespeople have said that they will have an integrated desktop search application out by the end of the year.

Earlier this year, Google also made the same promise, but we have yet to see anything from the search giant.

The Future of MetaSearch

There is a new application out which, to me at least, indicates where the future of search is going.

It is a desktop application called Blinkx and it is pretty amazing.

What caught my eye about this product was that it is probably one of the first real desktop based, local and web integrated search tools. In other words, when you perform a search through the Blinkx application, it not only searches through various web sources, it also searches local word docs, pdf's, powerpoint's, excel sheets, and even emails.
