You know it seems that the largest players in local search always have something going on, these “players” include Google and Bing who, from a local search perspective, continue to test and experiment with new features for local search. In the Search business it can be difficult to stay on top of all of the recent changes whether it be an algorithm update or changes to a particular vertical in Search. So we thought that we would compile a list of some of the more interesting going-ons as it pertains to local search in the digital space.

Traditionally May tends to be a busy month for Google algorithm updates. As we reported the other day, we have seen Google’s Panda 4.0 algo update as well as some others including Google’s release of their “Payday Loan Algorithm 2.0” which targets spammy queries. Could there be a Penguin refresh happening as well? A number of folks in the industry were reporting some SERP activity on May 26 and May 27. We have not noticed anything dramatic with our clients as we have seen clients experience increases in traffic ranging from 8-12% over the past week. This could be due in part to seasonality with the long weekend occurring with our clients south of the border.

It is May 2014 and Google updated their Panda algorithm with what has been dubbed Panda 4.0.  Here is some information about Google’s Panda 4.0 algorithm update.  As with the previous incarnations of Panda, this algorithm is looking to improve the quality of search results by removing or devaluing low quality (or what Google perceives as low quality) pages from their Web results.
