Having a secure website (i.e. https) may just give you a bit of a boost in search visibility. Google has announced that they are now using HTTPS/SSL as a ranking signal in their Google search algorithm.

SSL Defined: For those not aware SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and is a standard security technology/protocol for “establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client” (i.e. a web browser or email client). (Additional information here). In essence SSL helps encrypt data that is being transmitted.

HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure.
