Many webmasters have realized the benefit of using RSS to dynamically update websites. This means that the website content automatically changes when the RSS feed is updated. This allows for webmasters to serve dynamic content or a mixture of static and dynamic content on their website.

You probably haven't given a lot of thought lately to vertical search results, that thin sliver of search real estate that is sandwiched between the top sponsored ads and the top organic ads that generally shows a few lines of news results, or local, or products. I have. Don't panic, there's really no reason why you should have. It's really just a sad comment on my day to day activities. But I've noticed some things, and I think its incumbent upon me to share them with you. So let's get vertical for a few moments, shall we?

Yahoo announced the release of their new spider, Yahoo Slurp. Wait a second wasn't their spider already called Yahoo Slurp? Yes it was, but this new version is apparently faster and more efficient that the old one. isn't that what they said when they built the bionic man? Ah good old Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man. Well this may not be the Six Million Dollar Search Engine Spider, but it is a step in the right direction.

Yahoo states that we can expect a "25% reduction in the number of requests and bandwidth consumed by the crawler." As a result, when you check your log files next month you can expect to see less crawler activity from Yahoo Slurp. Yahoo has been testing the new spider in conjunction with the old one and it wasn't until earlier this week that it was fully deployed.

This means you must come up with a strategy to monitor your search engines positions. This strategy is crucial to the success of any marketing campaign. Think of your search engine positions as your online portfolio. Would you let your stock portfolio be ruled by chance and market fluctuations, or would you keep close tabs on your stocks so you could buy and sell when the time is right? This is the way you must consider your search engines positions.

I've been a fan of Google Sitemaps since their initial release last year. For myself, I felt that the true benefit of Google Sitemaps would be to provide insight as to various potential indexing issues with my client's sites. However in the 'early days' of Google Sitemaps, there was no real data to help me determine if there were indexing issues with the sites that I submitted.

In early May I was pleased to see the improvements that were made to Google Sitemaps. They made it easier to submit, they provided more statistics and they even implemented a Summary Page to let Webmasters know if their site is being penalized through what they call the Notification of violations of the Webmaster guidelines. This week, Google Engineer, Vanessa Fox announced some new features with the latest release of Google Sitemaps.

In the 1600's, Samuel Pepys became history's most famous diarist. From 1660 to 1669, this English Member of Parliament kept a detailed diary, which was published posthumously. Through it, we gain a fascinating eye witness account of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. Most passages were not so monumental, however. Here's one example from July of 1663:

Up betimes to my office, and there all the morning doing business, at noon to the Change, and there met with several people, among others Captain Cox, and with him to a Coffee [house], and drank with him and some other merchants. Good discourse. Thence home and to dinner, and, after a little alone at my viol, to the office, where we sat all the afternoon, and so rose at the evening, and then home to supper and to bed, after a little musique.

Twisting Your Keywords in the Wind

While studying the creatives of competitors throughout my years in the paid search industry, as any self-respecting SEM should, too often have I witnessed the same thing: It seems as though countless search engine advertisers use the same title and description to appear for all of their keywords. Of course that makes my job considerably easier. However this never ceases to leave me more surprised than a person trying to find a half-decent slice of pizza in Connecticut for two reasons. Firstly, when applied to a generous search advertising budget, this practice of lumping a massive amount of keywords together with a limited number of creatives basically translates into non-converting clicks that number in the thousands of wasted ad-dollars. Secondly, creatives that do not appropriately match the keywords they represent often fail to interest visitors who would otherwise visit the site.
