In a somewhat surprising shift in online usage, a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project and comScore Networks, search engines usage accounts for the second most performed online activity.

While email reigns as the most common online activity, 84% of the almost 1400 Americans surveyed said they use a search engine, while more than half use them at least daily. Approximately 64 million Americans are online each day.

It is notable, however, that when there is an important news item, or late breaking news, news sites become the second most popular activity.
