ASEOHosting, a provider of premium multiple IP hosting, has commented on recent Google algorithm updates to address apparent confusion among web hosting clients who publish informational content and how-tos.

The algorithm update, which has been referred to as the Phantom Update, was at first believed by some to target informational sites.

Because of Google's initial reluctance to provide detailed information about the updates and media reports based on partial information, informational publishers may have been led to believe that their sites are under threat of penalty.

ASEOHosting has commented in an effort to correct these mistaken impressions. In reality, as was revealed by later reporting and confirmed by Google, the changes reflected quality updates to Google's core algorithm, rather than the addition of Panda- or Penguin-like filters specifically targeting informational and how-to sites.

"ASEOHosting clients and other web publishers depend on search referral traffic to generate revenue. Interpretations based on partial information have the potential to mislead them into taking action that is harmful to their business," commented ASEOHosting’s Vice President of Customer Relations, Daniel Page, "We'd like to make it clear that the evidence shows that informational and how-to sites — a valuable part of the publishing ecosystem — have not been directly targeted by Google for search penalties."

The initial assessments of the algorithm updates were made as a result of declining search ranking for a group of sites within the informational publishing space. However, many informational pages have actually seen increases in search ranking since the updates. The significant factor is likely to be the quality of specific pages and domains, rather than a broad stroke against informational publishing. Publishers of informational and how-to content should focus on increasing the quality and user-friendliness of their pages.
