Concord, Mass. June 29, 2009 -- Professional marketers frequently make major mistakes in deploying video on the internet, according to filmmaker and internet video expert Michael Kolowich. The result, he says, is a waste of video production dollars, not to mention squandered opportunities to get more marketing mileage out of a company's video investments.
The observations come in "
Ten Ways Marketers Drop the Ball in Video Marketing", an article Kolowich has written for the
ChannelOne Marketing blog, published today. A content pioneer from the earliest days of the internet, Kolowich is the founder of ChannelOne Marketing Group.
All too often, Kolowich writes, web video deployment is an afterthought. "Very often, the production of a video is driven by a big live event, a trade show, a product launch, or a live presentation," observes Kolowich. "Only after the event is over does the attention shift to distributing the video on the internet. That's too late."
Common errors discussed in the article include:
- Failing to use modern video formats;
- Failing to have the video professionally prepared and encoded;
- Using YouTube the wrong way;
- Hosting video on your own server;
- Failing to search-optimize your video; and
- Failing to seed video through community connections
"With the web video landscape changing literally month by month, it's nearly impossible for any marketer to keep up with the options and optimal choices for video preparation, hosting, and promotion," Kolowich said in an interview. "Increasingly, it's important for marketers to work with production partners who not only are great visual storytellers but also have mastered the process of creating and distributing highly effective video-based interactive web experiences."
