While it is primarily for active duty military, veterans, guard personnel, their spouses and dependents that are at least 18 years old, anyone who is changing careers to become an SEO specialist or consultant may choose to participate in the work study program.

According to Nancy E. Wigal, the owner and operator of SEA DC, “It can be tough, trying to get experience in a brand-new career field. It’s chicken and egg – clients and employers want to see some experience, but an SEO guy or woman needs to be employed by either a company or as a consultant. I created this work study program as a chance for them to get some job experience optimizing web pages to improve their employment possibilities.”

SEA DC offers SEO training and certification in Washington DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland in various training locations. SEA DC can also come onsite to any business location. “I just need electricity and internet access to train folks,” said Nancy.

Attendees should have an internet-ready laptop to use during the 5 day SEO training and certification course. All training materials are provided. Students must take an online final exam and score 76% or more to successfully pass the course.

Attendees who successfully complete any 5-day SEO training and certification course have up to 30 days after passing the exam to sign up for the work study program. There is no additional charge to participate in this work study program, although Nancy indicated that there is a possibility of adding a small fee later this year.

SEA DC offers two works study tracks: students may either optimize some web pages for non profit associations pro bono, or they may contract with any business to get paid while optimizing the company’s web pages.

“I figured, let the student decide what organization or business they want to work with. The only industries or organizations they cannot provide SEO services for is the adult and gaming industries, as well as any group that promotes discrimination of any kind, encourages or participates in hate crimes or advocates the overthrow of the U.S. Government. Beyond that, I am fine with whomever they want to work with,” according to Nancy.

Participants in the SEO work study program are supervised by SEA DC by phone, online meetings, and limited face to face meetings. They receive assignments, meet deadlines and must show progress within specified time frames.

Nancy stated, “I can’t find anyone else out there who offers this. It’s one thing to spend lot of money, getting great training, but it needs to generate some experience as well. I’m hoping that my little program will help students gain a competitive edge for getting an in-house SEO slot or finding clients to start their own SEO consulting career.”

“Not only do I help them get some experience, I also take them through the basics of developing their own SEO consulting business – getting a business license, picking an accountant, developing their website and marketing materials, and how to successfully go to business networking events to clearly and simply communicate why every business website should be optimized,” said Nancy.

“People just don’t know where to start. I’ve done online courses that promise you can make insane amounts of money doing things, but they don’t bother helping anyone out with the business end. Folks just need to know the basics to get going. Once they get employed or get a couple clients under their belt, they’re good to go,” said Nancy.

Ideal candidates for the SEA DC SEO work study program are people who are changing careers and need to show some experience in applying SEO processes, principles and techniques to web pages so they come up higher in search results, and has completed one of SEA DC’s 5 day SEO Master Comprehensive courses.
