The company has just completed designing new mobile websites and optimizing them for mobile searches, letting these businesses capture more business from the millions of people who are gravitating towards using cell phones instead of traditional computers.
It is estimated that 48% of internet searches for local businesses and their products or services are now done from mobile devices such as smartphones and other web enhanced handhelds. Having a website “mobile ready” will only become increasingly more important as web enhanced mobile phone sales are expected to triple within the next few years.
“One would think that if a website is ranked for the top one to three spots in normal internet searches from a computer that it also would be ranked that high for searches from a mobile phone, but that’s simply not the case,” said Colin Receveur, founder and CEO of SmartBox Web Marketing. “Websites have two problems being found from mobile devices. First of all, the algorithms used by search engines for mobile sites are entirely different than that for searches that are computer driven. This means that a website ranked number one from a computer probably will not be on a mobile phone. The other problem typical websites have during mobile searches is from the users perspective. Mobile users are on the go. They type shorter queries, they view fewer sites, the information they are looking for could be entirely different, they are location driven and their phones can’t display complicated websites well.”
All of this means that it is becoming increasing urgent for website owners to optimize their sites for both applications. “That’s where things can get dicey,” said Receveur. “It’s like being in the wild, wild west again when the internet was in its infancy. Today, with the fast flood of mobile technology, search giants like Google are scrambling to keep up. What Google does may not be what another search engine is doing, so different tactics are used to optimize a site on different search engines.
Another factor to consider is the different needs of a mobile vs. computer user. “Someone searching from a mobile phone for a dentist or any other local business is also interested in how close they are to that business. They may even be on their way to that office or store for the first time and are looking for directions.” For that reason SmartBox has taken a great deal of care in making all of their clients websites GPS and Click-to-Call enabled. “Our clients customers can now complete a mobile search and get directions, find out how far away an office is and then even call that office, all with a couple of clicks.”
Commonly accepted statistics show that 80-90% of local business information is now found on the internet, and that nearly half of that is done from a mobile device. Over 80% of those people who conduct searches on mobile devices will immediately take action, such as visiting or calling that business. It has become imperative that local businesses have not just a web presence, but a
mobile optimized website (MOW) that customers on the go can quickly find and access.
