A strange thing started happening to me in the last 2 years or so. As I became more vocal about my opinion, people started seeking it out more often. The more I shared it, the more people nodded their heads. And the more obnoxious I got about it, the more people jumped on my own little opinion bandwagon. It you look at comments to this column as an indicator of striking chords, it seems like I touch cords either when I'm being a total dickhead (increasingly frequent) or introspective and emotionally deep (a much rarer occurrence). But other than a 'right on' post or comment, and the vigorous nodding of heads, I'm not sure it will go much further than that. Inside, we all like to be smarter than our bosses and a little bit revolutionary. But on the surface, where we live and work, we go with the flow. I call it the Cluetrain Conundrum.

The business cards can be exchanged during introductions, both as a convenience and as a memory aid. In other words, business cards allow networkers to further the relationship through future contact.

Business cards may include one or more aspects of striking visual design, but should also contain important contact information. Use this guide to make the most of your business cards:

Erica in Washington asked a great question about SEO with regards to the hosting of a site. This was actually a tough one to answer because really there is no concreate answer from the search engines on this topic.

This is one of those questions that we are often asked (as to how hosting in one country while trying to rank in another affects rankings in the search engines) that has proven difficult to answer. For example, let's say your website is hosted in Canada, yet you want to target the United States. Does the fact that your site is hosted in a different country affect your rankings?

The answer is yes. At least right now this is how it works with the engines.

It's easy to make money from blogs. There are all kinds of programs, affiliations available to make money from blogs. A blog is a personal space, rather a personal diary, with the difference that it is not a closed diary but one that is open to anyone to walk in and read and leave a comment. There are various types of blogs, some are business blogs and some are social networking blogs. Some blogs are personal some are professional but most of them have a theme on which their content is based. Creating a blog is easy, even a child can make a blog.

It seems like anytime I have a conversation with anyone who knows search and its effectiveness, we always come back to the same question, "Why don't more ad agencies and brand advertisers get search?"

Can you imagine if Google was around in the 50's when television was in its infancy or prior to that when radio came across the airwaves? We all know that Google dominates online advertising with their Google Adwords program (a pay per click program where advertisers/webmasters can create their own ads and bid on placement for their chosen keywords) and their Google AdSense program (a contextual advertising solution to web publishers/site owners that delivers text-based Google AdWords ads that are relevant to site content pages. You earn revenue by showing ads that are relevant and targeted to your website's content.).

Last April, James Lamberti from comScore, Randy Peterson from Procter and Gamble and I (representing SEMPO) grabbed a relatively quiet corner at the New York Hilton to talk about a potential research project. Here was our wish list.

  • a study that tied together online activity to offline purchase behavior
  • a study that identified the impact of search in a category that's not typically one that would be identified with search marketing
  • a study that would attempt to quantify the leveraged impact of search with brand advocates
