Search engine optimization is not about getting as much traffic as possible. It's about getting the right kind of website traffic. Sometimes, less traffic can be better.

Trying to get as many visitors as possible might not be a good thing

Many webmasters try to get as many visitors as possible. They join traffic exchange programs and they optimize their web pages for keywords that have very many searches.

Unfortunately, getting as much traffic as possible is not the right strategy for a successful website. Traffic that doesn't convert is useless traffic. If your website has thousands of visitors but only a few sales then you have done something wrong.

Businesses can use Twitter as a marketing tool in a variety of ways. Many business owners struggle with social media as a marketing medium. At the heart of the most effective social media marketing campaigns is personal communication. Many businesses that try to manage social media may attempt to shout their message, rather than simply engaging with potential customers. Potential customers who are active in social networks will not be receptive to marketing in this fashion. The trick with social media like Twitter is to interact and engage, rather than shouting your message.

Brand building is indeed a journey. Branding is all about how your product or service is perceived by customers and potential customers. A brand marketer attempts to manipulate brand awareness by associating traits they would like consumers to associate with the brand.

The world of mobile phones is a confusing one, particularly for those wondering how to start a cell phone business, as GSM frequencies and GSM phones work in some parts of the world and not in others. So what is the background behind a GSM network? The GSM network was first suggested by a group of European technicians and policy makers in 1982. It didn't take long for consumers and phone makers to adopt the new network after it first emerged in 1991, and wasn't long before there was growing GSM coverage in an increasing number of countries.

Even as a Canadian, I was amazed by what happened the night of November 4th. History was made in many, many different ways. And for that reason, I’m interrupting my series on Search and Branding, just for this week.

Obviously, every journalist and pundit will be falling over themselves talking about the historic implications of this election. Democrats and Republicans alike were gushing and seemed a little speechless about the implications of Obama in the White House. I have my own feelings but that’s not what this column is about. For me, this election was fundamentally historic for another reason. It changed forever the fabric of democracy in America.

In the last three columns, I explored the fundamentals of humans seeking information. To refresh your memory, the purpose of this series is to explore the importance of branding on the search page. Taking several steps back to begin my run at this topic (and risking a series that is “long and extremely wind baggy”, in the words of one reader), we’re now starting to get at some of the important concepts to understand in how we interact with a search results page.
