One of the pains that continues to be identified in most organizations that we work with revolves around education. The need for education on SEO and SEM is continuing to evolve and as a result B2B companies and B2C companies alike are looking for ways to educate their teams on the latest techniques to ensure online success. The Search industry is evolving quickly and there is a need to continually educate yourself on best practices and emerging trends that you can incorporate into your online marketing strategy. So how do we do this?

On March 18, there was a brief announcement on the Google Analytics Blog giving a “head’s up” on Google’s plan to release a browser plug-in that will allow web users to opt-out of Google Analytics tracking. Naturally, this sparked some vigorous commentary, with opinions ranging from ‘disaster‘ to ‘non-issue’. (Haven’t actually seen anybody – at least any internet marketers – suggesting it might be a GOOD thing.) Eric Peterson had probably the most complete coverage of the issue, with some astute observations regarding Google’s privacy motives being tied to their interest in collecting data from US federal government sites.

Google announced some new paid ad formats at SMX West – I was reading about them today in this post from Search Engine Land. If you want to know why these new formats will be good for your business, read that post. I want to tell you why they’ll be good for your customers.

Derek Gordon’s piece on Siri this week gave concrete proof to what I’ve been saying about the transition of search from a destination to a utility. Consider the example Derek gave of Siri’s functionality: make action-oriented queries into your iPhone like “find me a good French restaurant for two tonight.” Using your iPhone’s location coordinates, it will search Yelp for positive reviews of restaurants in your area, find a reservation for the most popular one via OpenTable and ask if you’d like to confirm a reservation. Once you’ve confirmed the time, Siri will book the reservation for you.

If your company has been delving deeper into social media over the past couple of years, you are most likely using some social media monitoring tools and your analytics to track the progress of your social media campaigns. I’ve mentioned social media maturity models in previous posts at Marketing Jive, so it is not like social media is a new concept or anything. Like a lot of the new media in the digital age, there are early adopters and then the folks who are a bit slower to adopt new technologies and avenues for reaching their audience. In fact, there are many who in late 2009 and here in early 2010 are only being to dabble with social media. A few years ago, I discussed social networking benefits to the B2B world as many were suggesting (at the time) that social networking served minimal purpose in the B2B space. We disagreed. Whether you are in the B2B or B2C space, social media can provide a huge arena for you to intercept and converse with your target audience.

Web site promotion software
Webmasters in online forums reported an unusual Google behavior. New web pages of some sites are indexed with a longer delay. Is it a new Google penalty? Or is it just a bug that affects only certain websites?

As if you haven't got enough to do in running an online business, there are all the social networking type services to consider as well. Is it worth the effort to have a presence on these services? Is it awfully time consuming or costly?

Steve Ballmer is an enthusiastic guy. As he climbed on stage with Danny Sullivan at SMX West, everyone was wondering how long it would be before he cranked up the volume and slipped into his typical Ballmeresque bombastic delivery. Steve didn’t disappoint. A few minutes into the interview, with Sullivan probing about Microsoft’s aspirations around search, Ballmer was yelling “Sell..Danny, Don’t Yell!” (ironic in the extreme) and roughhousing with poor Danny like a good natured football coach having a little fun with the class math geek. I half expected Steve to give Sullivan a noogie.
