Designing your own successful web page can seem difficult and nearly impossible if you do not do a little research first. The reason you need to know the basics of web page design is because the design of your website will actually influence whether or not people continue to visit your site and ultimately, whether they will buy from you or not. Obviously, a lot is riding on your website design so it is worthwhile to take this seriously and put some effort into doing it right the first time.

The Copyright Debate and RSS

RSS is commonly defined as really simple syndication. So, this means that any material contained in a feed is available for syndication, right? Well no, not exactly. It means that the content contained in an RSS feed is in a format that is syndication friendly, if the copyright holder allows for syndication. Offering a feed for syndication does not in fact grant any legal rights to anyone to reuse the feeds content beyond what the Copyright laws grant as Fair Use.

In practice, while your feed might legally be protected, you could literally spend weeks attempting to protect the contents of your feed. Legal gray areas are introduced with Search Engines indexing feeds and RSS Feed Directories including copywritten feeds, in their categorized directories. How do you distinguish between a legitimate search engine, RSS directory and someone simply reproducing the contents of a feed for personal gain? Legally how can you defend against one and not the other?

For many companies with websites there is a nagging suspicion that their websites should be more than online brochures. There is also a belief that their websites deserve to be highly visible on all the major search engines. Unfortunately, the search engines do not feel that way. Search engines believe that you have to earn your search engine visibility.

It is a hard fact of internet life that in order for a web site to do well on search engines it must comply with the guidelines and suggested 'best practices' of the search engines. There can be an elongated learning curve for some companies in coming to terms with this reality.

The future of search is Vertical

Some co-workers just came back from the SES in San Jose and one thing that they said that made me take notice was how much the search engines were pushing verticals.

Now before I get too far I should mention that what you and I may consider vertical isn't necessarily what they consider vertical.

For example, I consider verticals to be industry specific, i.e. a legal search engine dedicated to legal services, or a travel search for travelers. But search engines have expanded this definition and are moving in a new direction.

In order to create consistent sales cycles and a positive growth trend businesses usually engage in both short and long term marketing efforts.

Short-term marketing efforts tend to cause sudden sales spikes which rarely last. These sharp sales increases are usually the result of a targeted marketing campaign or time limited offer. While short-term marketing produces sales, long-term marketing efforts must be mixed in to sustain sales.

Well, you've joined the others and have created a blog. It is time to tell the world about your online journal. Most blog services generate an RSS feed. If your blogging software does not create an RSS feed, consider using software like FeedForAll http://www.feedforall.com to create an RSS feed. Like blogs, RSS is growing in popularity and is a great way to spread the word about a new blog.

Syndication is conceptually simple. It allows publishers to distribute content that can be displayed in another location or context. Using RSS, publishers are able to easily create and disseminate content feeds that include news headlines, blog summaries and related links. RSS is the defined syndication standard that has become mainstream. All types of information are now available in a syndicated format.

This article will put a damper on web sites that sell information which will supposedly increase your page rank. I may make some enemies here, but this is already common knowledge. In fact, to make sure it worked, I designed a new site just for this purpose. Before you shell out money for an ebook, software, or CD telling you how to do this; read this article. If you achieve great results after following my advice and feel it was worth some money, feel free to write me a check for any amount you choose. I 'll add my own zeros.

Page Rank. We all know what is. We all want to rank higher. Higher rankings mean a lot of things to a lot of people. To web masters it means achievement. They have accomplished a move in the right direction. A high page rank to a website owner is money in the bank. It is also an impressive accomplishment. To other website owners your page rank may be a source of envy.

If you've tried to use email marketing strategies you know how hard it can be. Getting recipients to open your email can be very challenging. I'm going to show you a technique that does NOT require that the recipient open the email at all.

When you open your email In Box in the morning and 'weed out' the SPAM, how do you do it? By reading the subject line. Unless an email is blocked by a SPAM blocking application, the user reads the subject line and decides whether they should open the email or delete it.

If you can provide valuable information in the subject line, rather than a 'pitch' you stand a much better chance of getting them to open it. Here's an example of what I mean.
